GroundworkWhen doing Ground work I like to use the Monty Roberts Dually Halter, I have found this to be an extremely useful piece of equipment that I have used successfully on many horses from leading and loading problems to everyday use. Please see Pressure Release article. PLEASE NOTE BEFORE USING THE DUALLY HALTER IT IS RECOMMENDED YOU WATCH MONTY’S ‘HOW TO USE THE DUALLY HALTER’ DVD OR CONTACT KELLY MARKS INTELLIGENT HORSEMANSHIP www.intelligenthorsemanship.co.uk Ground work is so beneficial to both you and your horse, it helps in gaining confidence, trust and control. You will therefore see a difference in the relationship between you and your horse. What is ‘Ground work?’ You can teach your horse to walk with you when you walk, stop when you stop and back up when you back up, all with the slightest touch and use of body language. Teaching your horse to back up and turning through ‘L’ shaped poles is a good exercise for them to learn where to put their feet in relation to the direction in which they are travelling. You can teach your horse to walk over Tarpaulin and through water. Standing for the farrier and standing while you mount can be made better by practicing ground work as can loading into a trailer or horsebox. These are just some of the exercises you will find useful. There are many activities you can do ‘on the ground’ with your horse. Weather you are a rider or non rider, adult or child, it does not matter. If you can not control your horse from the ground it is unlikely you are going to be able to successfully control him when riding. To find out more about Ground work please contact us.
